“I recently did a shoot with Amanda, and seeing as it was my first outdoor on location shoot, i couldn’t have asked for a better photographer. Amanda was extremely organised and began the session by chatting about what clothes and ideas i had making me feel just as involved with the outcome as she was” Headshot in Ryde
Get better headshots
First impressions count, and the head-shot that accompanies an online profile can be as important as the words. A blurred shot taken on a night out won’t create the right impression for many sites. So this article is going to show you the types of headshots you might need for a variety of uses.
Taking control of the session is key to capturing really effective portraits. This control also enables you to produce portraits that you can use time after time. Ask your photographer if they are able to produce:
- shadowless lighting
- clean backgrounds
- direct poses
You’ll be familiar with the expression, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression”. This is never more true if you use your social presence to contact people, make arrangements with businesses or set up a date online. Your website, twitter account or Facebook profile may be the first impression people see of you. If you want to turn those people into more than acquaintances, you’ll feel more confident about your achievements if you’re putting your best foot forward. Your online presences is your biggest means to make a first impression, make it shine.
“I could tell she had a clear structure of the day from previous visits to the location as well as a rough idea of when to capture the best photos as a result of her knowledge of knowing the various energy levels of the photographer and the model throughout the shoot.. I loved many aspects of Amanda’s professionalism.. including her communication.. which involved giving constant direction as to what works best. As well as her suggestions about which pose to do.. she had a great ability to sense when i felt i had lost a bit of inspiration and would instantly change the direction of the shoot for example the outfit, location or posture.”
Agencies will accept black and white images that include head and shoulder shots only. Explain the intended use for your portraits to your photographer so you can generate a variety of images that can be used on a range of sites. Do you have a check-list of photos you require? Start here:
- direct gaze, square shoulders, facing the camera
- profile gaze, narrow shoulders, looking out of the frame
- 3/4 gaze, ear to the back shoulder, eyes to the camera
- 3/4 gaze, ear to the front shoulder, eyes to the camera
After you’ve the above poses in the bag, you can start exploring different expressions and gestures. These are the photos where the agency will be able to see more of your character. The most important thing is that the photographs represent the real you – you don’t want to arrive at an audition looking like a completely different person from the photograph you submitted.
“I also found her feedback throughout very encouraging and I could see for myself what worked and what didn’t. She was full of great advice and handy little tips to create photos which were full of movement and expression.. she even at times explained to me the technical part of the camera which helped me have a better understanding from the photographers point of view.. overall i found it a very fun and creative experience which provided me with a greater insight into the world of modelling and photography as well as some great quality shots for my portfolio. I highly recommend Amanda as a photographer and wish her the very best for the future.”
