An important family portrait session in Appley Park
It is 10.30am in the morning on an autumn morning in the Isle of Wight. Alongside the beachfront in Appley stood a bag full of props, a blue car, and a happy photographer grandly designating Appley car park as the perfect destination for family portraits.
Who hires a professional family photographer?
Today’s family consisted of a loving mother, a protective father, a laughing ten-year-old boy bursting with energy, and a one-year-old, wrapped up warm against the chilly wind.
By the car park, leading up to the old golf course is a twisting path, the location of our first photo shoot, a perfect corner for our family, resplendent in their coordinated outfits. Conversing with the mum we work out the best way to capture the family together without upsetting baby and disrupting Jake’s boisterous energy.
Why do people choose to hire a family photographer?
It’s freezing cold and this job of recording baby’s first birthday is something to be envied, becoming a small slice of the family’s memories is an honour. Sweet smiles fall from our lips as we review the first photographs – Jake perched on a bench, relaxed and at ease.
The baby gurgles, not that he knew we were there today to celebrate his first birthday. Dad’s turn is next and presents a very distinguished profile, anxious nerves suddenly lose their jitters, certain camera-shy nerves melt away and shoulders relax (and everyone suddenly looks ten years younger!)
How do people feel ahead of their session?
Walking to our next location, I apply myself with zeal and chatty earnestness, a promising family session always creates happy excitement. Conversations on the phone, before a portrait session, are apt to be somewhat nervous in character. What happens? How much are the photos? What do I need to do next? Will I get all my images?
A cold wind came whistling along the path. We all shivered. I managed to cast a surreptitious glance at my camera. Beautiful family portraits, everyone happy, and at ease.
And what did I do to get Jake relaxed? I challenged him to a race (and let him win).
Why order photos?
I’m so pleased this family came back to me a second time to order the next set of photographs. A mother’s love for her boys (both big and small) is inexhaustible. Running to help whenever they call: chauffeur, cook, and friend. Finding the energy to be a nurse, teacher, and mentor.
“A mother’s love is something no one can explain, it is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.” Helen Steiner Rice
You might have fallen into the trap of thinking a family photoshoot is too much effort, but don’t worry, I’ll get your family out and about laughing, joking, and smiling so we create photographs to keep, forever.
If you are thinking of a family session this autumn I do have some spaces available so please do get in touch, I’d love to hear from you. Get in touch.
