Ways to wear textures – Natural Portraits – Isle of Wight Photographer

Wear textured clothes to your portrait session

A touch of lace, a splash of sparkle and the warm embrace of faux fur, woolen mits, and a snood (yes, I’m old enough to remember them). I’m very active in helping my clients get ready for their natural photography session in Appley. I want you to take pride in the impact your photographs have and I’ll work hard to ensure you enjoy the day. Anna got in contact just prior to starting a new job. I’ve since kept in touch via FB and love her pithy comments and vibrant outlook on life.

Portrait checklist:

  • warm coat with cuffs or collars
  • woollen mits, hand-warmers and gloves
  • scarves with graphic designs or sequins
  • shawl that can be used as head wear, wraps or waist tie

Well-coordinated clothing helps viewers to focus on your character

Choosing outfits that suit your personality creates portraits you’re sure to love. Capturing and sharing your images immediately is a great benefit – the instant gratification of seeing your portrait has huge benefits. The fact of the matter is we can switch clothes, add accessories, or move to a new location in the blink of an eye. You’ll be in control of your photography session, right from the get-go.

Textures make your skin look luminous

Textures add dimension and interest to your portraits. The textures are found in:

  • lace
  • cashmere
  • faux leather
  • denim
  • fabrics

The shadows and folds in the material will contrast with your face, giving it the appearance of smooth, glowing skin. Look again at Anna’s photographs, she’s paired a texture (cardigan) with a smooth material (the dress). Both outfit choices are dark hues that allow the eyes to rest on her happy, confident smile after circling between the fence, the bright corner where the sun peeks over and her hands.

How to plan your outfit?

Generally, I start with colours and ask you to use my style guide to make the right choices. In these photographs, I asked Anna to use ‘autumn colours’ as the base colour; we met during the start of autumn and I knew the leaves would take on hues of red, orange and brown.

It’s easier to pile all your favourite clothes on your bed, then narrow down your choices using these questions:

  1. Which clothes are russet, navy, olive, mustard or gold?
  2. Which clothes have longer sleeves?
  3. Can I sit comfortably without the blouse gaping?
  4. Do I like what I see when I look in the mirror?
  5. What does my family/friends think?
  6. Have I sent a snapshot to Mandy?
  7. What do I want the photographs for?

I hope you find these tips helpful and that your next natural portrait session on the Isle of Wight is a hoot. I’d love to know which tip you think is the most helpful.
