4 tips to natural portraits – Hackney, London
Photographing people in locations near to home is my favourite approach. It gives us an opportunity to create beautiful images in an environment that isn’t stressful – no time constraints, worrying about that pile of laundry or the car tax. London has lots of undiscovered nooks and crannies just by your home.
Embrace your portrait experience
Many people feel anxious when the day of their portrait session arrives, but you can get great shots if you follow these 4 simple steps.
#1 Build rapport with your photographer
I really enjoy photographing people because they give me a chance to really get to know them. It’s also an opportunity to create valuable information on my client. Do you blink? Are you uncomfortable in front of the camera? Is this your first time on a natural portrait session in London?
#2 Get to know your style
A relaxed, natural portrait session is also the ideal way to get to know your photographer and decide on which style suits you best. At first, you might have enjoyed looking at a website, but until you meet with your photographer, you won’t know what to expect. You won’t understand how those beautiful images in the galleries are created. Not knowing what to expect creates anxiety – do you even want your photograph taken after all!
#3 Get into the groove
Many people like a little guidance right at the start. Naturally, people make sure they look good for their lifestyle session, but might worry about their portrait options. It’s not every day we get to pose in front of a camera. I always start with a few seated poses. Think of these as a little taster session or a warm-up for your favourite photograph. Once we loosen up I move to little prompts, “walk to the bench and sit down as though it’s a balmy summers day”. These helpful suggestions are prompts to help you get into the swing of things. I’ll be using a long lens and you might even forget for a moment that I’m even there.
Often I simply observe from afar as we talk a stroll through the park or sit to feed the ducks. We naturally move onto the next location and do the same thing all over again!
